The grand Baroque-style Winter Palace sits on the banks of the Neva River and is no longer the home of Tsars but now houses the Hermitage Museum. It was originally built for Empress Elizabeth, daughter of Peter the Great. A fire destroyed large parts of the interior in 1837 so has been extensively remodelled since then.
